Creative Commons Licences : Chances and Risks for the Management of Non-Governmental Organisations

  • This diploma thesis points out and analyses chances and risks of Creative Commons Licences (CCL) for the management of Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs). Initially, the CCL-concept is described in detail and integrated in the conflicting priorities of „intellectual property“ and the „digital commons“. In the section on NGO-management, the organisation's stakeholders are specified. Four interviews with responsible persons from NGOs complement the theoretical findings of this study. The results should advice NGOs how to profit from the CCL's chances and how to avoid their risks. Nine hypotheses about this relatively unexplored topic are provided, which derive from theoretical and empirical approaches and which are hereby regarded as provisionally verified. In summary, this work comes to the conclusion that the chances in adopting the licences outweigh in relation to their risks. Additionally, it states that the dialogue between the NGO and its stakeholders should carefully be taken into account in the final evaluation of these factors. During the implementation of the CCL, the NGO always has to consider their individual attitude towards a free licensing of digital information goods. Furthermore, this work should give NGOs and persons interested in the knowledge society suggestions for a successful handling of information goods and the employment of free licences.
